Rising out of the minimal grade change on the Tideflats are the machines and structures of industry and development. Cranes, smokestacks, and dock piling remnants are a few vertical focal points that create a dynamic relationship with scale – up close they are reminders of the massive construction that industry requires, from afar they emphasize the strong horizontality and expanse of the site.
Verticals also pertain to sound on the site, where the lack of major grade changes on the Tideflats allows for various noises to travel great distances. The barking of seals can be heard along shorelines competing with the steady grind of industry in the background. The occasional boat horn communicating navigation can be heard for miles as it cuts through the drones of manufacturing.
