Week 2 of the winter term, we’re making a massive shift, and we’re excited about it.
We hit these dead ends in trying to use our thick methods on the Street End sites:
-sites were too THIN
-sites were too SMALL
-sites were not very dynamic
-sites had almost no users
-sites had almost no FUTURE/potential users because of their locations
-no ecological dynamism
-not very contentious narratives/histories?
-they were not a system/didn’t talk to or relate to each other
We want a new site that is:
-thick with potential uses and current uses
-ecologically dynamic
-contentious/interesting history and likely future change
-large and complex, multiple/varied possible experiences
-possible to visit every 1-2 weeks
We’re really excited about the TACOMA TIDEFLATS because:
-industrial but will soon probably change and/or need to layer in MORE uses
-could be an environmental education/museum of industry outdoor experience
-could connect people more viscerally to processes of extraction, production, waste, reuse
-tidal changes
-river/discharge from Puyallup
-adjacent to rapidly developing coast/downtown Tacoma
-accessible by train
-Interesting history/reservation nearby/complexity
